Cartography

Cartography a fancy way of saying map making.

How many current conflicts can trace their roots to arbitrary lines drawn in Africa and the Middle East? Ethnic groups were split up or thrown together. Groups that just could not get along and were held together as colonies would suddenly be a nation.

Why do Brazilians speak Portuguese instead of Spanish like the rest of South America? Because of a line drawn by Pope Alexander VI.

Hi

Cartography is an important element in warfare, be they paper or electronic.

The British Royal Navy had some of the best naval maps in the world at on time (and still has in some instances) and this crucial facet enabled it to expand its Empire and garner its economic strength.

Many national or state/county boundaries are arbitrary, mainly based upon or around specific geographic features, wherever they are in the world. Even after a war, the boundaries are usually formulated along rivers, mountain ranges or geographic aspects. Sometimes its the stuff underground that helps formulate a boundary and thus a specific economic resource is controlled by.
Finally there are those boundaries born out of religious or ethnic groupings, or a mixture of all the above.

Regards

Andy H

On the flip side how many battles were decided by bad maps! Attacks made into what looked like easy terrain that turned out to be almost impassable. Fords on a river left unguarded because the defender thought that spot could not be crossed. Attacks coming through a pass that the defender did not know was there.

Once a decisive military victory has been achieved by conventional means, the victor may then be in a position to start carving up territory, creating new nations. If this process is executed badly, it can certainly sow divisions and create problems that increase the chance of war in later years. Perhaps the Euro colonial period was the worst in this respect.

In the modern day, the Middle East is trying to reform itself into something different. So far the west has tried to keep and protect borders in places like Syria and Iraq. Perhaps the Kurds will get a new country at some point, earned through their fighting IS.
