Which means I don't take what the Arabs say seriously either. It sounds mean, but neither should anyone.

In 1948, one of the British administers for His Majesty's Mandate of Palestine; Sir Alan Cunningham, I believe, said something along the lines of "the Arab lives in a land of oriental make believe", predicting that the Jews would win in the struggle for the land. He meant of course the growing Ashkenazim population leaving the horrors of war-ravaged Europe and not the Sephardic Jews. He added that they were determined, organised describing them offhandedly as "semi-European".

The British were dismissive; but they had more than enough of an impossible situation by 1948.

As for me, these seemingly callous statements do not mean that I regard the deaths of Arab civilians as less. I was moved watching the New York Times video of the Gaza doctor who lost three of his daughters. Moreover, I believe this incident seen on Israeli television (Dr. Abu al-Aish speaks Hebrew and had been in contact with Israeli media at the time as well as working in an Israeli hospital as a noted specialist) probably made the Israeli government immediately set in motion the current cease-fire. Public opinion on the left has never been comfortable with the Gaza operation.

In short, one must be caring, but stay objective and neutral. Nobody is, neither the well-meaning but guileless American Evangelicals or the hairbrained radical leftists also easily suckered. Each side knows how gullible both of you are and are both hysterically using their media connections as much as possible (The Jews in the media seem to be losing steam, while the Arabs on the campuses or ceaselessly contacting the media are or have already overtaken the aging, befuddled and assimilated Jewish diaspora who have lost of the "elan vital" that their relations from the late '40s had.

That was great when France beat the All Blacks!

Respectfully yours,

Operation satanique 1985
The book is " I shall not hate; a Gaza Doctor's journey." Dr. Al- Aish moved what remained of his family to Toronto.

The only sensible thing to do unfortunately.
