How Much Damage Can the Terrorists Do To the OLYMPICS?

One wonders. People attend the Olympics to enjoy the evens and not to practice diving underneath desks. Are Americans, for instance, changing their plans to attend? "How about a few weeks in Paris? We'll watch on TV over champaign."

For Americans, Russia is so far away and has been secret for so long that we find it difficult to warm to the place. We don't connect. Does the KGB still lurk? Putin was KGB after all. Will we be bombed while riding on a bus? Does the danger, added to the expensive, make it just too dear?

Are the British, French and Germans thinking the same?

Can Putin put the citizens of the World at ease so that they'll attend? It appears that the Russians don't trust their new tyrant, why should we? And why should we do something that conforms to this despot's wishes? Isn't he Stalin sans his shirt?

Speak for yourself. I spent two days in St Petersburg 18 months ago. A regular poster--Stryker 19K30 lives there. The people there are just like people anywhere else.

There will be hundreds of thousands of people going to the event. How much damage can they do?
Ever hear of the Munich Olympics? They can attack transportation, which they have already done. They can take hostages. They can set off IEDs and kill hundreds, which they have already done.
This is the same bunch that took hostages at a movie theater and killed most of the audience, they have seized schools and killed innocent children, they have used chemical agents, they may have SAMs that could take out a commercial aircraft.
And every television network will have camera crews there...
So you tell us, how much damage could they do?

Iirc the Russian authorities killed most of the theatre audience by using too much gas, and also went into a booby trapped school with all guns blazing.
A terrorist attack would be bad, unfortunately if it's a hostage situation , the authorities response could be just as devastating. In fact any terrorist would love to have the Russians to be all gung-ho and to cause more casualties. I had the honour of meeting an ex Russian policeman who said that the government do not care about lives in the same way as the west, they care more about losing face.
He also said they are too free with officers lives too, that's why he quit and became a security asst for some rich Russian who will stay nameless

after terrorists exploded bombs and started killing hostages. Both hostages episodes are well known you can find plenty of details elsewhere.

Russia seems more like a place to go to get away from a gang of Terrorists.
After all, Snowden did.

God if people didn't go to places because some arse wanted to blow stuff up, London would have been deserted in the 80's with the IRA. Just get on with it. I might ask the Russians here, these places that were hit? Could they be described as soft targets?

Of course terrorists could harm Olympics.
Even make it a bloodshed.

But it is equally applicable to all Olympics in all countries.
Germany 1972 is a good example.

And Russians are not worse, than Western security crippled by
the politically correct restrictions from above ( no profiling,
no using word international terrorism etc.. ).

I am not a big fan of Putin, but it seems to me, that he won't
tie hands of his people and they will do all necessary to protect
Olympics.

Remember, it is Russians who warned us about Tsarnaev brothers
and it is us , who did not use this information.

Volgograd unlike Caucasus until recently wasn't the area of special attention for security services. I believe it can be described as an average, typical city as far as security measures are concerned. Of course, during the Olympics those measures would be extraordinary to put it softly. Nevertheless it is rather doubtful that passive measures alone could prevent determined terrorists from exploding bombs in the crowd. As for active measures there is a dearth of information available.

This is a Muslim group fighting for independence from Russia, some Americans can not wrap their heads around the fact that Russia and even China face the same challenges that radical Islamist pose to other nations.
We have this image in our heads of a total police state. That may have been true 30 years ago, but these groups know no borders. There have been terror attacks in China, they will increase, and hopefully someday, all the governments around the world will put aside their petty bullshit and stand together against these radical SOBs.
