Tom Le Chom Airport Landing-Pilot's View (1 May 1967)

A former pilot's description --

III corps, in the Fishhook area on the border with Cambodia; southwest of Loc Ninh. Flew in there as a C-130 pilot 1968 & 1969. It was 3000' feet long, 60' feet wide. We used assault landing and takefoff techniques which minimized approach and takeoff speeds, and maximized reverse thrust and brakes for landing. We usually carried ammo to the forward fields. Great video...looking at it looks very scary today, but was routine back then.

I got my pilots license 12 years ago and any student pilot remembers his first landing (and stall practice). Taking off and flying is the easy part, put dropping in on final is the best thrill ride on earth. To make it even more exciting, the short grass field landings are even more fun, you really drop it in, even more fun with a slip! Landing is the happy ending and the best part of flying for me.

Its funny I used to quite enjoy stalling. All the crap on the floor flying up to the roof. I agree though landing was the most fun except when you got that ground effects lift just above the ground if you got it a bit wrong and then the plane just crashes down on to the tarmac whilst everyones watching...

Correct name is Tong Le Chon. Tom Le Chom is probably the US way to pronounce it.

Pretty amazing ! I was on LZ Carolyn in the same area. We had a couple of C-130's do the "skid-drop" with ammo. The LZ was too hot though. We abandoned the LZ after a massive ground attack on May 6, 1969. God Bless you all my lost brothers.

Nasty little airfield. to those that flew into such places. to those that manned such places.
