He is largely remember in Britain for his attempts during the Falklands War to bring forward a peace deal between Argentina and Britain. It was doomed from the start as neither side was prepared to back down.

Early claim was made by the whaling industry at the peak of that in the 19th Century. A few decades later the Royal Navy wanted it for a coaling station under British control. My take for modern times is the residents are reluctant to become involved in Argentinian politics, laws, ect... ie: the 1970s was the era of Argentinas 'Dirty War'. The islanders were not ethusiastic about trading distant British government for the Argentinian of that era.
Several attempts to negotiate a handover failed.

Guess he felt he had to try. I wonder if there were fears that a Brit naval defeat (not that such a thing was possible ) would compromise NATOs North Atlantic capability in some way.

Thanks. I guess this means the residents of Falklands are mostly in favor of being under British jurisdiction rather than Argentine?

Although I never met Alexander Haig back in 1966 while I was in Vietnam, he was our 2nd Brigade Commander, 1st Infantry Division.

I'm not sure he qualified as a great statesman. An American Ambassador to China who had been born and raised there, and who served during the Nixon Administration, once commented on an (un-named, but it was Haig) General who wanted China summed up in an hour interview, and never asked for any input following his visit, given that a few days in country had made him a "China Expert". To be fair, he noted that there were other flag officers with the same proclivity.

Speaking of Ambassador to China. How about Leonard Woodcock. After Woodcock served as UAW president those many years he went on to China as the US Ambassador. Now we have many General Motors assembly plants in China. What a coincidence!

Umm, slight question, how many of the population of the Falkand Islands speak Spanish? Buenos días señor and that´s about it.

I wouldn't either. I never liked Haig, and neither did my Uncle.
