British Bases South Atlantic conflicts
Inthe evetn of another falklands war:
assuming that the Flaklansds were temporarily occupied agaion:
Where woudl Britian base out of?
My impression of 1982 was that the operation was run on a ' longstring' with Ascension Island the nearest air base.
Nightingale island can in theory:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nightingale_Island
Hold an airstrip
Form a deep water anchorage by linking Middle island , then filling in breakwaters onthe east side.
Ideas & alturnatives:

That's a lot of work that won't be needed. There is no way the Argies can invade the Falklands. They don't have any amphibious capability anymore and never had the airborne resources.

Waht is important ot remember is that the 1982 retaking was close to being abandoned.
Argentina had not aranged for more than two long distance refueling tanker aircraft, ( although these were readily available),or proper low altitude bomb fuses.
Either one of these & Britian abandons the attempt.

I don't think the RAF has any long range bombers or tankers anymore. I think the South Georgia Islands rank about the same as the Aleutians. The Aleutians were famous in World War II for having a beautiful woman behind every tree!
No trees!

The British forces are smaller than in 1982 but much more combat experienced. The Argentinian forces are much smaller and less well equipped.

No bombers but they still have the Lockheed Tristar and VC10 tankers with new Airbus A330's due soon. As long as the RN keeps one attack sub anywhere in the South Atlantic, its quick transit time would allow it to sink anything bound for the Falklands.
PS In a book I recently read, I was surprised to read that the Falklands Defense Force uses Steyr AUGs instead of L85's.

To date they don't own any. I think much of the extra money is going to el Presidente's political supporters.

If you get a chance have a look at the history of the adaptation and adoption of the L85. It does away with any kind of doubt as to why something else was chosen.

I know all about it. I was just really surprised that there wasn't more pressure to adopt it. The book also mentioned that the Islanders could outwalk the regular forces and that they were excused from a lot of the marches since they already knew the terrain so well that they didn't want them to get bored or burnt out.

The Bermuda Regiment uses the Ruger Mini 14 as well. It's my understanding that they want to switch to the L85 as it would obviously make training easier but the MOD won't provide the funding.
The Bermuda Regiment, Gibraltar Regiment, and the FIDF do not serve overseas so I suppose it does not matter what rifle they use.

Pruitt, or anyone, can aseries of 5-6 kilo class subs, refurbished, defend the Argentine littoral against British nuclear submarines?

Not as well as genetically engineered laser-powered cyber-Liplurodons. I wonder if the Argies are planning some?
