Never played it, but I have been looking at it recently. Looks pretty interesting, I saw Steam has a demo, I might have to try it.

Europa Universalis is a grand strategy game where you need to balance the resources, diplomacy, stability, land and naval forces, economics and diplomacy, with achieving victory on the battlefield. For example I would achieve Scenario victory.

The original Europa Universalis can be picked up for $2.95 from GamersGate. It's a bit long in the tooth, but the price is right. It may even get cheaper in the days ahead.
EU2 and EU3 are much more expensive, particularly a full collection of the latter since it is the most recent and has the most expansions. I would wait for a sale on them and buy them in a collection as that's the cheapest way to get the base game and all its add-ons.

I'm much more exited for East vs West. A similar game (part of the Hearts of Iron series) from the same company, but taking place during the Cold War, which is for me a much more interesting time period. Paradox website says it's coming out Q2 2013.

I haven't played in a while but I really enjoyed EU2.
EU3 looks like a piece of crap.
I would recommend For The Glory which is an updated EU2 with all the mods thrown in if you want to play with them.
