I take a shot at it. The crucial piece is the staircase. We are looking down or descending to either mans downfall or to hell which all the clues point to.

I too think the clues point towards the Descend into Inferno from Dante's Divine Comedy.
  1. Staircase is descending
  2. Blazing fire is an inferno
  3. Dante Alighieri
  4. Richard Wagner (composer of Faust) was the (future) son in law of Franz Liszt (composer of Dante symphony that was dedicated to Richard Wagner).
