Cross Keys revisited.
After leaving off such an important detail, it was necessary to revisit the battlefield to wrap up some lose ends. Mainly the so called ambush of the 8th New York infantry guided under the hand of General Stahel.
Attempting to make an attack on the Confederate right, the anticipation of such an attack was a block by Confederate General Trimble and his division.
Lying down behind a wooden rail fence, Trimble's men were not seen until they were called on to fire at the 8th New York at 50 yards.
The thing I have to ask is 'I wonder why Stahel did not send out skirmish line to find where the Confederate Army was located'?
Does anyone have any idea about this?

I'm guessing the NY unit was on the march rather than line of battle, not anticipating contact at that point for whatever reason. A similar situation comes to mind from July 1 at Gettysburg, only the sides were reversed.

Dennis

I am facing East to take this picture about 100 yards from Port Republic Rd. This lane follows the rail fence on the right and the ridge to the left is where the Union Army came up and over and walked into General Trimble's men hidden behind the rail fence.
