But the German crews were as surprised as the American opponents and the M24 had the advantage of a faster turret traverse. Before the panzers could swing their turrets at their smaller foe, the M24s slammed several high explosive rounds against the thinner side and rear turret armour. These were enough to set off an internal fire which destroyed both panzers.

The Chaffee's had problems in Korea against Soviet built T34-85's also. Does anyone know why HVAP ammunition wasn't available for the M-24 by then?

75mm gun on the M24 was a different chamber size than the M4 series. Different ammunition caused many head-aches when the M24 was deployed in the European theater.

An experimental HVAP round, the T45 had been developed during WW2 but was shelved when production of the 75mm armed M4 medium tank ceased. Since the 75mm medium tanks were quickly discarded post war and M24 was removed from the tank battalions and issued to the Cavalry, with very tight budgets it is not hard to see why there was no interest in producing such a round.

I doubt the M24 killed any Germans by itself. However a Crewed M24 probably killed more then two.
