In Belgium we have 11 millions of people living on a territory of 30000 square kilometers. It's not like we have plenty of place.

According to those same projections most of that loss will come out of the Germans.

Well, in case of my girlfriend, and all her friends, it's simply pure hatred of Sarkozy.

FOR the first time in 24 years, the French have elected a Socialist, François Hollande, as their next president. According to exit polls published at 8pm Paris time on Sunday evening, Mr Hollande secured a convincing 52% of the vote, securing the majority he needs to unseat the incumbent president, Nicolas Sarkozy.
I hope that the French elected the good man to lead their country.

Election nights are not fun anymore.

They announce the exit polls and there's an immediate concession with the winner declared at that point.

It's all over in minutes. No tension at all.

I'm going to bed.

I wouldn't.

Oh well, I hope Merkel makes clear that we are not going to pay for all that. Well, not immediately. Only once they loose their BB+ rating. Then of course there will be no alternative yadda yadda yadda, fork over your money and we'll give it to other countries for free while pretending that its really not like that.

Now that the election is over in France, I do wonder how will this affect the other European countries who are trying to enact austerity measures? Will this mean the policy of austerity be no longer deemed inevitable despite the out-of-control levels of past spending? Could this push France over the edge?

More importantly, does this mean Obama will want to work more closely with the new President, Hollande, who is a socialist?

That's true, but at the same time, I'm wondering if it's more wise to wean people off various public assistance programs more slowly, enacting austerity measures more gradually?

Extreme austerity measures will turn some people off, as evident in Greece's case, where mass protests are common, and a revolution nearly occurred. As matter of fact, in California, some cities decided to adopt austere budgets, leading to mass protest rallies. Imagine if this were to be enacted nation-wide, massive riots will occur and some city sectors will look like ravaged war zones.

However, I don't know if gradual austerity will stave off the looming economic disaster, or this will calm down the investors and creditors alike, giving a much needed boost to confidence in various sovereign governments trying to solve the crisis.

Obviously harsh austerity hurts, but without it your debt keeps rising and you'll end up paying the price down the road. Europe really needs to fundamentally change the way their economy works. It needs a complete structural reform to the right. It spends far too much and has nothing to show for it.

The new French President has declared "an end to austerity", heavier taxes on the wealthy and the adoption of pro-growth strategies.. Greece now looks set to go down the same path. Up to now, European countries have followed the doctrine of austerity, compared to the US which has followed the doctrine of stimulus and growth. Whereas the US is growing (albeit at a very slow rate), so far, it hasn't worked out at all well in Europe and the UK has even gone back into recession.

These are two completely opposing strategies.

Which one will be successful?

How the Hell would I know?
