Arm thought to be lost at Antietam being studied
The work is being done at the National Museum of Civil War Medicine in Frederick, MD.

Interesting for sure. For all we know the person that lost the limb may have gone on with a long live. Losing arms or legs was very common. Not just from cannon fire but the large cal. soft lead ball round of the muskets inflicted massive wounds when they hit the bones of limbs.
Interesting article on Civil War medicine in a recent Military Heritage Magazine.

anybody besides me think somebody finding a severed arm and pickling it for posterity is a bit odd (and morbid)?

Perhaps with the finder, but definitely not the physician. I just finished "Debris of Battle" and learned about numerous body parts from Gettysburg casualties that were preserved in the hopes that their study would lead to improved surgical and medical techniques!
