Fascinating stuff. Interesting to see things that have changed and things that have not.

It shouldn't be long before we finally know which F-35 variant will be flying off the UK's new carrier(s).
One can appreciate the simplicity that the F-35B STOVL jet will bring to flight deck ops by doing away completely with the catapult and arresting gear.

Kuma – I know you like the F-35B (are you a past Marine?), however, I would be worried about the difference in combat radius and bring back weight for this variant. As I understand it the F-35B combat radius is about 470 NM and F-35C combat radius is about 615 NM. I would be concerned that the shorter radius would put my carriers in greater danger from land based attacks or limit my power projection capability inland.

It is hard to get straight data comparing bring back weights but I know that the UK is considering a rolling type landing with the F-35B to be able to have a higher bring back. And I would bet that it still won’t be close to the maximum bring back of an F-35C.

So yes the CATOBAR system is more complex, but IMHO it comes with much better combat capability.

Definitely the C has longer legs than a B and can carry a larger internal weapons load. OTOH, the B is not actually short-ranged and has a longer range than today's standard for naval strike fighters, the SuperHornet while offering advanced stealth, avionics/sensors, etc. Each has it's strong and weak points but whichever model they select the RAN will enjoy a capability exceeded only by the USN..If the decision is going to be driven by costs, in which case the B would seem to have an edge, trumping the range and payload advantages of the C.

BTW, the current combat radius figures for the variants from LM:
A = >590nm
B. = >450nm
C = >600nm

First class.

I always thought that the Supermarine Scimitar was a most underrated aircraft.
