Multiple bombings in southern Thailand kil at least 8
At least eight people have been killed in three explosions in the southern Thai province of Yala, officials say.

Yala Governor Dethrat Simsiri said the blasts occurred over 10 minutes at around midday (06:00 BST) in the commercial district of Yala city. He said two of the bombs were hidden in motorcycles and the third in a car.
Thailand's three southern-most provinces have been plagued by bomb attacks and shootings since 2004, when a separatist campaign reignited.
The Associated Press and Reuters news agencies put the death toll from Saturday's bombings at eight, with around 70 wounded. AFP quoted an army colonel as saying seven people had been confirmed dead and more than 70 wounded.
More than 4,300 people have been killed in the violence in southern Thailand. As of 2011, the Thai army had 60,000 forces stationed in the region to tackle the insurgency.
Thailand annexed the three provinces - Narathiwat, Yala and Pattani - in 1902, but the majority of people there are Muslim and speak a Malay dialect, in contrast with the Buddhists in the rest of the country who speak Thai.

Explosion in southern Thai hotel.

Turmoil descended on the South again yesterday when a blaze gutted a luxurious hotel in Songkhla, causing at least 14 deaths and hundreds of injuries.
Thick smoke pours from the ground floor of the Lee Gardens Plaza Hotel as firefighters struggle to control a blaze that killed five people and injured more than 350 others. Many guests and workers had to be rescued from the building. Authorities said the fire was caused by an explosion. As of press time, they had yet to find any evidence linking the fire to bombings in the South yesterday.

All the bombings in the southern Thai provinces are carried out by Muslim separatists who want to break away from Thailand.
Since those three small provinces are mainly Muslim, I'd think Thailand would be better off just handing the provinces over to neighboring Malaysia.

There's been a lot of worldwide activity by Muslim separatists lately. China have also been busy containing violence in the Xinjiang region.

Countries don't like to lose territory regardless of the circumstances.
Would the loss of these provinces have a significant impact on Thai trade or on its military position?

It could reach a "more trouble than it's worth" scenario.
Would be interesting to see if Malaysia would be prepared to put in a bid for the provinces. After all, Malaysia and the three populations have the same majority language, culture and religion.
Maybe Malaysia could rent the 3 provinces on a long term lease. Could be a 'nice little earner' for Thailand.

I can't imagine that they'd be particularly valuable, and they certainly seem to be causing Thailand a lot of trouble.

Could be another Sabah in the making. I think the Thai government is smarter than that. My bet is on their sending more intel agents to the area and more "counter-insurgency" actions soon.

Army chief says Thailand facing 3,000 militants

Bangkok, April 2, 2012 (AFP) - Thailand is fighting against more than 3,000 Muslim militants waging a shadowy insurgency in the deep south that has claimed thousands of lives, army chief General Prayut Chan-O-Cha said Monday.
"There are about 300 of leader rank, 3,000 operators and about 10,000 supporters," the general said, adding that their numbers had fallen due to arrests. Prayut called for people to remain calm following the weekend attacks in which a tourist hotel was targeted, raising concerns as Thailand prepares for the mid-April new year Songkran holiday. "Do not panic because that is what this group wants," he said.
The region was an autonomous Malay Muslim sultanate until it was annexed in 1902 by mainly Buddhist Thailand.
