On what site was that tank labeled as having a 90 mm gun? The info on the militaryfactory.com variant list is suspect, by the way.

That's not a 90mm. That is the 76mm with a muzzle brake. The US Army did not field a 90mm gun equipped Sherman. There was tests of it but never type classfied nor fielded.
The tank shown is either a M4A3E8 or the M4A3 (76)W HVSS (which is the type classification of the M4A3E8)

I'll have to check my Hunnicut book to double check the proper type classification of the M4A3E8. I also think it has a picture of the test turret with the 90mm gun.

Nope,... it an M4a3e8. The 90mm Sherman had a different turret, the barrel was longer and the muzzle brake a bit different.
Go to this link and look at the pic in the top right

-E8 was a designator for the HVSS prototype tanks. It doesn't have anything to do with the armament.

The picture is from the 1st Cav Museum, that recently created a Korean War area, that this tank is part of the display.
The US Army of 1950s understood the importance of keeping tanks with infantry, so the Sherman was selected; the M26/M46 was reserved for the European battles that never occurred.
Most of the M4s were taken out of the tank battalions and used to fill out the Regimental Tank Companies of each Infantry Regiment in Korea.
I know the US Army kept the Shermans in the inventory (National Guard units) until the early 1960s.

Looks like a side hatch from the turret from a M4, although the examples I find all show markings on them....
