A very close nod for Ely Wallach over Lee Van Cleef, because Ely could also make you laugh!

How can there be any question here? By far the meanest, most cruel bad guy in all westers was Jack Palance in Shane.

Do Indians count? I've always thought the bad Indian in Dances With Wolves was a pretty neat bad guy. Can't remember his name however. That guy has been the bad Indian in several films.

I can tell you who should have been a very bad guy and was so miscast that he is not. That is the "Blue Duck" character in Lonesome Dove The role called for a man who was cruel to the bone, and the actor they got wasn't. Too bad. Now if Jack Palance had been younger and cast in that role he would have been deadly!

Lee Van Cleef. He did both good guy and bad guy roles very well.

A good movie, based on a good book by Dorothy Johnson, the late Montana western novel writer, one of the best. Another good one from her is "The Hanging Tree."

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance - Lee Marvin, 1962
The guy in the black cowboy hat is often more interesting than the one sporting white.

Wes Studi. He's a full blood Cherokee from Oklahoma who spoke only Cherokee until he started grade school. He made his living as a horse trainer before he got into acting.
He's also a Vietnam combat vet: he was in the 9th Infantry Division in the Mekong Delta.
In an industry full of wannabe tough guy action heros, Studi is the real deal.
