Looks a bit like Sperrbrecher 15 the ex-Norwegian merchant Taronga. At least the superstructure and general hull layout are similar. The masts and cargo handling have been cut way down if it is.

The Funnels reminded me of a Kent class class so I knew it was British, but instead of the Kent's Superfiring turrets, it has wing turrets. Looked like a Battle cruiser so my best guess is the Indefatigable-class battlecruiser HMS New Zealand.
And now after I made my guess I see you have confirmed it is a battlecruiser.

See if anybody can get this one. My grandfather served on her as an electrician during WWII.
Looks like the Repair ship USS Vulcan (AR-5).
Here is a good photo of a great looking model showing her before her 1970s refit that removed her four 5" guns. I know you are proud of your grandfather and rightly so.
