Battlefields in NC
Hello everyone. I'm headed to the western part of NC (near Asheville) for a week. Are there any ACW battlefields in the area? I figured this would be the place to ask. Thanks!

There are a handful of sites associated with the March 1865 Stoneman Raid in that part of North Carolina, but the major battles that took place in the state were all east of Raleigh. You will probably want to visit Salisbury, which was the site of a major Confederate installation that housed nearly as many Union POW's as Andersonville.
There's plenty to see in that beautiful section of North Carolina, but little of it is Civil War battlefield-related. Be sure to visit the Vanderbilt place, the Biltmore. And if you like wine, they make a very good one there.
I suggest checking the North Carolina Civil War Trails site, http://www.civilwartraveler.com/EAST/NC/, which will give you a driving tour of what there is to see. According to the website, there are some sites in Ashville proper.
Have fun.
Eric

You dog! Have a great time. Asheville is one of the places we are looking at for a possible resettlement since our retirement.
Do not miss the Biltmore, though you can't take pictures inside and they don't market a book that suits me showing the interior. You may also come across some Revolutionary War stuff in the area. For example, Cowpens National Battlefield is around 1-1.5 hours away.
Best regards,
Dennis

I froze to death one night in Asheville NC looking at Christmas Lights. Cold place in wintertime.

Did you catch Ashvillite Warren Haynes' "Christmas Jam"? That's some GREAT music.

I couldn't convince anyone in the family to trek off to a ACW historical site. However, I did manage to hit Cowpens on the way home. So it wasn't a total loss as far as American history was concerned.

Glad you got to stop there. While I know where it is and local friends recommend it, I've yet to stop myself. We're planning a search of possible retirement areas this winter, and its already scheduled!
Regards,
Dennis
