Apparently a horrific and devastating earthquake isn't enough to keep some people from enjoying their vacations.....

So you'd probably think there's no way that cruising tourists could have returned to frolicking on Haiti's beaches mere miles from where people are trapped beneath the rubble of a decimated city. Unfortunately, you'd be wrong.

Isn't that on some island offshore, far from all the ruble?

Hell, if people are gonna throw a hissy-fit over these guys trying to give the local economy a boost, then I say stop somewhere nicer next time!

I guess when Katrina hit,all tourism in the US should have been stopped? So I guess that all of Haiti must be forced to suffer like those in the capital?I guess the people of Labadee must suffer even though they weren't hit by the quake? And never mind,of course that the cruise ship also offloaded relief supplies while at Labadee. It's not like they were vacationing in Port-au-Prince,amongst the death and destruction.

I agree, complaining about this situation really is a non-sequitur. And if the ship offloaded relief supplies then they're still doing their part, along with providing the economic boost of tourism (about the only thing Haiti has going for it at the moment) and keeping the company afloat (and returning to Haiti, which they will hopefully keep doing, and will keep the economy alive in that region).

Speaking of Katrina, notice how nobody on the left is putting the infrastructural delays and need to coordinate the transportation of aid to Haiti at Obama's feet? here is Spike Lee's documemtary decrying the anti Haitian bigotry by the US for the "slow response"?

Bunch of hypocrites.

I read the article on the cruise ship and the private beach and my first reaction was "gross". but then I thought about the damage area is not the whole country and this area is untouched. The article commented that some 300 haitian workers served the tourists on the beach. Staying away would just hurt local workers and so I think going to another island which is what they would have done just hurts the haitian people more. I know 300 workers out of 9 million people isn't much.

At face value the act looks to be in poor taste. But if you ditch the emotion and look at the numbers this did mean an investment in the economy. Also I hear the ship donated food from their stores to the Haitians.

I suppose it all depends on how you look at it. Cruise ships aren't obligated to make landfall in disaster areas. Some might see this as tacky, others might say it was nice of the skipper to park his rig and spend some time giving aid to the Haitians. He could have just as easily steamed over to the Dominican Republic and given no aid at all.

Perhaps we should invite Spike Lee to do it himself and show us how much better he is at it. He can take the Reverend Wright down there with him.

When Royal Caribbean announced its decision to resume stops at Labadee last week, a company executive cited the economic importance of the resort to the local citizens as well as the opportunity to deliver much-needed supplies.
Royal Caribbean is delivering relief supplies and personnel; as well as keeping one small part of the Haitian economy going.

Although, as a passenger, I might not be too keen on docking there.

Well, it is in the very finest of maritime traditions. After all, the First Class passengers aboard Titanic fought over the lifeboats while Third Class adults and children drowned. One must keep up appearances...
