146th Anniversary of Gettysburg Address

Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.

Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation, so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battle-field of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.

But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate...we can not consecrate...we can not hallow this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us—that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion—that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain—that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom—and that government: of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.
Events are happening all this week in Gettysburg commemorating Lincoln's famous address. Thursday is the actual anniversary.

Lest we forget.............

One of the often overlooked facets of Abraham Lincoln's genius was his way with words. Lincoln was a sincere speaker. He had a true gift of writing. The most famous example of Lincoln's writing skills is in his Gettysburg Address. Lincoln's Gettysburg Address is one of the most frequently quoted speeches in American history.

The Gettysburg Address was given during the dedication of the Soldiers' National Cemetery in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. It was delivered in the midst of the Civil War, just months after the Confederate soldiers had been defeated at the bloody Battle of Gettysburg. The date was November 19, 1863.

The Gettysburg Address wasn't even considered important the day it was delivered. The main speaker for the event was Edward Everett, a Whig politician from Massachusetts. Edward Everett delivered his speech before Lincoln. Everett's oratory lasted for two hours. Lincoln's speech was listed as simply 'Dedicatory Remarks'.

Lincoln's speech at Gettysburg was barely over two minutes and only contained ten sentences. Yet, in that small space of time Lincoln managed to convey the United States principles of unity and equality. The speech contained lyrical phrases and haunting imagery. In this small snippet of words, Lincoln started with "a new nation, conceived in Liberty" and ended with "shall not perish from the earth".

And had he given it one day later, something remarkable in all history would have happened on my birthday. But, I can't hold making that one mistake against that President.

My one beef with the new visitors center at Gettysburg is the vocalization of the address. I just don't like the voice.......somehow it doesn't sound like I imagine it should.

The Remembrance Day parade just completed.

This year I was asked by a friend at one of the battlefield tour companies to be the "official" photographer for the company. I had all access to the staging areas and the units as they formed for the parade.

It was an amazing spectacle. The Union troops were in great numbers this year, easily dominating over their Confederate counterparts. The re-enactors truly looked the parts they were attempting to play, especially the southern boys, and one could actually, for a moment, believe you were back in 1863, watching the armies form up for battle.

At one point I was able to take four Confederate troops up into the Farnsworth house attic, where actual southern troops were during the battle, and stage some shots of them moving up the stairs, about the house, and firing through the attic window. These guys were a great help, and were thrilled at the opportunity to be up there. Geez, I was thrilled to see them up there, looking exactly as one would imagine some rebs would look, taking aim on the Yankees on Cemetery Hill.

The parade was inspiring, and at one point I was fortunate enough, following the troops as they marched through the town, to be standing in the street at about the same spot where that famous picture of Lincoln's procession was taken on November 19th, 1863, looking back up Baltimore Street as the masses marched south toward the hill. I got some good shots of this, as well as many of individual soldiers from both sides.

The Rememberance Day parade is one of those things one truly needs to see for themselves. I couldn't help but be moved by it, as I am sure any student of the civil war would be. The guys who come here each year do great credit to the memory of the American Civil War and those who fought in it. Sure, they are having fun with what they do, but they always display honor and respect, and it is a great time to be in town when an event like this occurs.

I took so many pictures the battery on my camera died, but I will try and post some of them when I can.

Nope, I think he's a bit over the top. There has to be a happy medium somewhere!
