Except, you have Gehrig as an outfielder?
Glad to see you picked Rose

Talk about a total brain cramp here.....why have I been thinking him an outfielder when I know he was a firstbaseman. Oh well I am going to blame it all on the upcoming wedding.....
Ok Im tossing out Foxx as my firstbaseman and moving Gehrig there...I'll come up with my 5th outfielder here shortly....

Ha, ok. I thought you knew something I didn't
You might consider Sisler, Greenberg, McCovery, Terry, Killebrew, Palmerio or even McGwire.

As much of a Yankee fan as I am, it's still hard to toss out a veteran of Connie Mack's dominant A's teams of the early 1930's. Not only did they field some great players, they were all players who knew how to play, and play under the most demanding manager of their day. With that in mind, Jimmy Foxx was no lightweight.

Great numbers, to be sure, but with the exception of Spahn and Alexander, your pitchers were softies. Walter Johnson hated throwing inside, for fear of killing a batter. Drysdale and Gibson, on the other hand, would gladly bean their own mothers for outs. Big-time hitters, like Mays and Aaron, really feared them when they entered the box. I want my pitchers mean and nasty: they bring home the brass rings at the end of the season.

I like pitchers with a little bit of a mean side too . At least put a little doubt in the batter's mind about being pegged beside the head .

Agree. But none of us took Sal "The Barber" Maglie.
I'd love to see guys like Gibson, Drysdale or Marichal pitch to some of today's hitters. That armor Bonds wore on his elbow wouldn't have helped him a bit!
Regards,
Dennis

Hornsby I thought I was stretching on the SS. In his 2164 game career, 1561 at 2b, 356 at SS, 192 at 3b, the other 60some games at 1b and the outfield. I guess I can see playing 10% or more of your career at a position as making them competent. My argument on Berra would be as an outfielder his numbers don't compare enough to knock one of the other 5 off the list. While Ruth's pitching stats play out pretty close with the each of the 5 guys in my staff.

When I used to play in a Strat-o-Matic baseball league, we had a rule that players could only start games in positions proportional to their actual record.
So... You couldn't make somebody like Hornsby your regular shortstop or Berra your regular leftfielder. We also limited At Bats and Innings Pitched to the real-world proportions.

Yep... After hitting a homerun off Gibson or Drysdale, the last thing a hitter wanted was another At Bat that day - A 100 mph fastball behind the hitter's head was generally in store for him.

Does strat-o-matic even exist anymore? I thought that the best game ever. I played for hours every winter.
That really takes me back, Doc. Thanks.

Ruth's pitching stat's... LINK
From 1914-1933, Ruth was 94-46 with a 2.28 ERA. He stated three games in the 1916 and 1918 World Series; going 3-0 with a 0.87 ERA and 2 complete games.

That photo looks to be dated 6/21/21 which would be Ruth's second year with the Yankees. Since they are at home, the photo was taken at the Polo Grounds in Manhattan which was the home of the New York Giants, NY's premier team.

Are you kidding me? Both Roger Maris and Berni Williams were not only superior fiedlers, but they both exhibited far better plate discipline than Jackson. Bernie even had himself a batting title back in the '90's.

At 3B Greg Nettles or Clete Boyer would be better choices, and as much as I admire Richardson, his double-play mate, Tony Kubeck, was a great shortstop. (Kubek was inducted into the Hall this year as a broadcaster.) And both Billy Martin and Willie Randolph had that indefinable yet undeniable knack for winning. A-Rod's a choker, and Bogg's was a mercenary.

Clemens is a juicer, and Randy and Moose were chokers. Give me Lefty Gomez, Ron Guidry, and Mel Stottlemeyer. Those guys were winners.

No Joe McCarthy? No Billy Martin? No Ralph Houk? This certainly can't be the list of a Yankee fan. Tsk tsk.
