Oh brother, I share your pain.

Iíve often had to man pack Jerries of Diesel fuel myself. A 20 litre jerry of Diesel weighs a tad under 20Kg. I always carry two, one in each hand, for the balance.

Just carrying one, tears your arm out of the shoulder, the resulting imbalance means a visit to the Physioí over any distance more than 400m. At least, thatís my mileage.

If hills are involved I decant half of one jerry into an empty can and carry the two half full. Good balance means less strain on the back. With a twenty Kg. load Iím good for a fair few kilometers.

Up hill, or if soft sand is involved, Iím lightening them again. Maybe a third full jerry each side? Soft sand and uphill is a regular bastard.

After carrying that sort of load any sort of distance, Iím guessing that the weight of the Zippo was negligible?

Cheers

Mick

So named because there was a major VC HQ, I believe it was Military Region 5, located in the mountains in the top center, originally found because of the radio antennas. Also known as Death Valley or Dragon Valley.

LZ Karen is on the ridge line out of the picture to the right and one more ridge line over is LZ West, known to the Vietnamese as the Mountain of Leeches. Just north of LZ Karen is hill 102 or as helicopter crews knew it, Million Dollar Hill because of the large numbers of helicopters scattered around it.

To the left rear of the photographer is AK Valley and The Shooting Gallery, quaint sounding places indeed. We got into a fierce firefight with a 12.7 in the hills just to the left. It is hard to see, but Route 534, what we called the Old French Road went up the right side of the valley and crossed over to LZ Ross.

Memories.
