What Eastern-born 19th-century president did the most to change the trans-Mississippi

What Eastern-born 19th-century president did the most to change the trans-Mississippi West: Thomas Jefferson (Louisiana Purchase, Lewis and Clark Expedition), Andrew Jackson (Indian Removal Act, Trail of Tears, creation of Indian Territory), James Polk (control Oregon, annex Texas, gain New Mexico and California territories through Mexican War), Abraham Lincoln (Homestead Act, land-grant colleges, slavery and Reconstruction issues in the West) or Ulysses S. Grant (Peace Policy toward Indians, completion of first transcontinental railroad, Belknap scandal at Indian trading posts)?

A near toss up between Jefferson and Polk, But I guess I 'd have to go with Jefferson because without the Louisiana Purchase I doubt the situation that led to Polk's "manifest destiny" drive westward would have occurred.

Jefferson followed by Uncle Abe for reasons stated.

Yes, I'd go with this.

US Grant hasn't a hpe- the RR was already underway, and being in office with a pair of scissors handy is hardly an accomplishment. I think Abe would have turned his hands to a lot more domestic stuff, but he was otherwise engaged before his untimely demise, so a what if there.

Of Polk and Jefferson, I think Jefferson was by far the most visionary. Besides he picked up the LP for a song given the other side needed the cash, and Louis and Clarke was a good first step to check out potential. Polk seems more an opportunist, with each of steps leading somewhat naturally to the next and I'm more the idealist. So Jefferson. We could use more folks like him these days.

I have to go with Jefferson for the same reasons as everybody else. I also go with Polk as next. Both have always been favorites of mine. Polk may be the most underrated President in our history IMHO. Also one of the most successful one term Presidents.
