Does anyone compare to Buffalo Bill Cody as an American celebrity?
William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody was a skilled hunter and frontier scout before turning to the stage. In 1876, four years into his stage career, he returned to scout on the Plains and took the scalp of an Indian. By 1877 he was again devoted to showbiz, first onstage and later with his own touring Wild West exhibition. Does any figure in American history compare to Buffalo Bill as a celebrity?

While not a true military figure, (although there is credible evidence that he did work as a spy of sorts while he toured the world), Harry Houdini was the first real superstar in American history. Houdini rewrote the book on showmanship as well as the business end of show business. At the height of his popularity he was the most popular man on the planet.

If we limit it to the West, and also include only while they lived, Cody is a good bet.
If we're talking about today, I might go with Wyatt Earp due to the recent spate of movies. Custer might also be a nominee here.

I agree with your choice of Wyatt Earp. I imagine he's much more popular now than when he was alive.
I'd have to say that "Tombstone" is my favorite Wyatt Earp movie.

The only figure that might spring to immediate mind is TR.
Altho Earp and a few others of the same era could be canidates.

A bit earlier and only on the national "stage" (although Mr. Crockett was later popularized in legend) but celebrities of America's Wild West sure enough.

I was thinking about Annie Oakley. Her fame spread beyond US borders, though I don't she has spanned the test of time at celebrity status.

Quite a Lady. Give her a movie or two and she'll be right up there.

I think she does have a movie or two, though not on tombstone scale. Didn't Reba play her in a movie some time ago?
