Post Books: Best Books/Links on The Napoleonic Era

The Napleonic era is one of the most written about timeperiods in history. There are hundreds of good books on the armies and tactics of Napoleon and his peers in other nations.

I've only dabbled in that era, and have stuck faithfully to my Osprey books and a few other good books on uniforms.

What are your favorite books on the Naploenic wars?

The best single volume work is 'The Campaigns of Napoleon', by David Chandler.

One of my first buys ever and worth every penny!

But with such a big subject the list would be huge.

One you finish Chandler's book...

Once you finish Chandler's Campaigns of Napoleon, my second recomendation would be John Elting's Swords Around a Throne: Napoleon's Grande Armee. Something a bit shorter and very readable would be Gunther Rothenberg's Art of Warfare in the Age of Napoleon.

The Cassel's History of Warfare series is very good. I have
the Rothenburg book, the Renaissance Warfare one, John Childs' Warfare in the Seventeenth Century (excellent!) and Jeremy Black's Eighteenth Century volume (he's great as always, but this one emphasized warfare outside of Europe too much for my personal interests).

I've only read the latter two.

Thanks for the recommendations. I have read about specific battles and the Peninsula Campaign in some detail, but have been searching for a good over view. I have "The Encyclopedia of the Napoleonic War" which is a could reference, but it doesn't really tell how how one battle "flows" into another.

At Barnes & Nobles, I found a book called Napoleon as Military Commander. Writted by Sir THomas Cromwell back in 67. Good read and for only 8 bucks, who can beat the price

This is a good list of books on Nappy, but how about all the rest of the war? Are there good books that anyone could suggest for

1. A basic intro.

2. Tactics

3. Organization of the armies

4. The politico-military situation

Thanks!

There is a book on Napoleonic tactics, "With Musket, Sword and Cannon" by Brent Nosworthy.

I have seen it around but never picked up a copy. Maybe next time!

Reading Christopher Duffy's Austerlitz 1805 right now as the 200th Aniversary is next Friday.

His book Borodino is also worth reading.

Parker weaves in a surgeon's account to discuss the types of wounds and casualties in Napoleonic battles--the stuff that cuts through glory varnish on war.
His mastery of the pen is an enjoyable read.

Digby Smith's Napoleonic Wars Databook is a must have. It lists virtually every battle, not just the ones napoleon commanded with OBs and casualties.

Seize the Fire by Adam Nicolson is an exceptional book on the culture and institutional nature of the major navies during the Napoleonic wars.
