Reference: Favorite Military Quotes
"Although extraordinary valor was displayed by the entire corps of Spartans and Thespians (at Thermopylae), yet bravest of all was declared the Spartan Dienekes. It is said that on the eve of battle, he was told by a native of Trachis that the Persian archers were so numerous that, when they fired their volleys, the mass of arrows blocked out the sun. Dienkes, however, quite undaunted by this prospect, remarked with a laugh,
"Good. Then we'll have our battle in the shade."
"Come and get them."
Spartan King Leonidas' reply to the Persian Leader Xeres demand that the Spartans lay down their arms (at Thermopylae)
"Go tell the Spartans, stranger passing by, that here obedient to their laws we lie.

BTW quotes might be from anybody from any era........i like the one that was attributed to Bill Mauldin during the Italian campaign vic. Volturna river crossings Nov 43.
When queried about the dangers of minefields he was reported to have said:
" an old man thinks of his eyes and a young man grabs for his balls"

Soldiers usually win the battles and generals get the credit for them.
--Napoleon Bonaparte--
Major, thank General Longstreet for his kind words, but say, by God Almighty, he neednt doubt me. We will stay here, by Jesus Christ, if we must all go to hell together.
-Col. John R. Cooke,27th NC to Major Gilbert Moxley Sorrell, Longstreet's equivalent of Walter Taylor, after relaying Longstreet's fear of them being pushed back from an imminent Union charge at Antietam against the already battered units that Cooke was commanding (27th NC and 3d Arkansas).. The attack never came.
Out of 325 present for duty the 27th NC lost 31 killed and 168 wounded, a casualty rate of over 61%
