Bakers Dozen of Sunken Ships

1. HMHS Britannic
2. HMS Hogue (one of three cruisers sunk by U-9 in less than an hour in 1914)
3. RMS Lusitania
4. HMS Invincible
5. HMS Cressy (the 2nd cruiser sunk by U-9)
6. USS San Diego
7. SMS Szent István (torpedoed by Italian MAS boats)
8. Imperatritsa Ekaterina Velikaya - scuttled to prevent capture by the Germans
9. SMS Pommern (sunk at Jutland)
10. HMHS Llandovery Castle
11. Léon Gambetta (French armored cruiser sunk by Austrian submarine)
12. French Battleship Suffren (sunk by U-52)

13. SMS Magdeburg

Magdeburg was possibly Germany’s most important loss of the war. She ran aground in the Baltic whilst minelaying and was then destroyed by Russian cruisers. Importantly the German code books were captured by the Russians and then passed on to the British who put them to good use as part of their intelligence effort.
