February 19, 1945 US Marines Invade Iwo Jima

Iwo Jima was one of the bloodiest battles in history for the US Marine Corps. It has also been one of the most enduring in our collective memory, symbolizing the beginning of the eventual triumph over the Imperial Japanese in World War II.  On this day in 1945, the battle began.

The flag raising on Mt. Suribachi is an unforgettable image of the triumph of the Marines in this battle, and is perhaps one of the most famous photographs ever taken.
