Cantigny, France, 1918

The torn landscape of France in World War I.
The torn landscape of France in World War I.
The American Expeditionary Force under General John J. "Black Jack" Pershing has had little opportunity to prove its worth to its battle-hardened French and British allies, who have been fighting the Germans in the trenches of France for years. Pershing has resisted pressure from his allies to dole out his units piecemeal to them as replacements—cannon fodder. Finally, in May 1918, Black Jack’s boys are presented with an opportunity for independent action, an assault to eliminate a German salient in the lines near the town of Cantigny.

In this Command Decision challenge, you take the role of Lt. Col. George C. Marshall, operations officer for the AEF’s 1st Infantry Division. Your job is to divise a plan that will lead to success and prove Pershing has been right in insisting America’s forces remain under American command.
