A Pictorial Review of Origins 2021

A Pictorial Review of Origins 2021

Or, “What I Did On My Post-Summer Vacation” Origins 2021 was held September 30, 2021 through October 3rd, 2021. It was a unique event, but then these are unique times, eh? I was able to attend on Friday and Sunday. Over the course of my time, I snapped some shots of things that might be of interest to our tabletop gaming audience. If I missed, you, your event or your booth, my apologies, it was a bit of a whirlwind experience. The convention center is a large facility with huge halls. You could park an airliner of two inside these spaces! The new parking garage on the north end of the facility added a lot of much needed parking! The registration desk space was well organized and running efficiently. Across the room was the pre-registration check in stations. This was fast and easy with a staff member on hand to assist with any issues. I arrived very early on Friday morning with vendors completing their set up. Origins 2021...

Star Wars Armada – Game Review

Star Wars Armada – Game Review

Star Wars Armada  Game Review.  Publisher: Fantasy Flight Games Designer: James Kniffen and Christian T. Petersen Price  $99.00 for the Starter Set $15.00 and up for additional ships. Passed Inspection: Beautiful miniatures. Exciting game play. Fairly easy to learn and lots of advanced rules. Perfectly captures fleet actions in the Star Wars universe. Failed Basic: Some components are difficult to put together and tend to fall apart during game play. Rules are not always clear. More layouts needed to speed learning of ship and squadron information. The Admiral sat overlooking the crew pits on the bridge of the Eviscerator, a Victory Class II Star Destroyer.  His crew had engaged a Rebel task force of a Corvette and a Nebulon B frigate.  The two Rebel ships launched their complement of X Wings but they were soon outnumbered by the multitudes of Tie Fighters that the Imperial ship scrambled.  The high quality of experience provided by the endless conflicts since the Clone Wars, plus the exceptional training offered at the Imperial...

Gamers Solve HIV-related Mystery

Structure of Molecule Solved by Gamers. May Help In Halting Spread of Many Viruses Including HIV. In a study published by the journal Nature Structural & Molecular Biology, gamers took three weeks to solve a problem that had stumped scientists for years. A mystery had surrounded the precise crystal structure of the M-PMV retroviral protease. In simple terms retroviral proteases are what allow viruses to reproduce. The implications to understanding how viruses reproduce could have a broad impact – stopping the reproduction of viruses including HIV. Scientists provided gamers with a program that facilitates the creation of three dimensional molecular structures by using a puzzle-like mechanic. This program, called FoldIt, has been used since 2008 and has been employed to solve problems related to Alzheimers and Cancer, among other things. The gamers’ solution, while not perfect, gave scientists a solid map from which they could refine the details of the structure and solve the mystery. In the conclusion of the report it stated, "The critical role of Foldit players...
