Beltring War and Peace Show, 2005

Armchair General

As I was leaving Beltring for the day, I observed what must have been the show’s entire complement of Jeeps lining up to enter the arena. There were dozens of them, all different types and despite my boredom with Jeeps, it was, I will admit, an impressive sight. But before the Jeeps could enter, a whole load of Tanks had to leave. So there I stood, jaw in hand as these mighty machines thundered by. I felt, not for the first time, like I was in a war zone.

As the Tanks rolled past, tracks clanking and engines throbbing, the ground shook. One tank alone is an impressive sight, to behold an entire column of them, well, words can’t do it justice really.

So I’ll end the piece here, with these images of a Sherman as it drove by me, dust swirling around the tracks, leaving one ACG reporter with his tongue hanging from his mouth.
