Today, August 16, 2012, is the 200th anniversary of a unique event: the only time an American city surrendered to the military forces of a foreign power.
During the War of 1812, William Hull surrendered Detroit to Britain’s Major General Isaac Brock. For his action, Hull became the only American general ever sentenced by a court-martial to be executed.
